Latest News Tuesday 30th May :-  Three, Two and gone for this year. Warning tragic events.

We’ve had nest boxes in the garden  since moving to Norfolk in the late 80’s. Over that time we’ve had birds nesting  successfully in both the closed box and open fronted boxes.

Diary of a Great Tit Nest box Camera

A few years ago, in 2014, we put up a nest box with a wireless camera installed and managed to capture a pair of Great tits rearing a brood.

Last year, having built a custom nest box with a wired camera, we failed to attract any birds to any of the sites with cameras. In an effort to avoid the attentions of the numerous cats that we now seem to have roaming  the area, we moved some of the boxes around to new locations in the garden.  Earlier this year a pair of blue tits began nesting in the one box without a camera.

Thinking all was lost, and the relocation had disturbed the birds, we had almost give up hope, until about three weeks ago, when a male Great Tit began to bring nesting material to the box with the camera. Then, interestingly, everything stopped until about a week ago, possibly because of some building work by our neighbors, or it could be that that’s how the whole nesting process works. The male reappeared around the nest box area on a nearby fence. When we checked the camera a few days later we found the pair of Great Tits had completed the nest and were now sitting on eight eggs.

The aim is now to try put together a series of images and a  video as life in the nest progresses. Hopefully, they will be of better quality than in 2014.

Had a bit of a tragedy in the great tit nest box today. After a great start in the box with, 8 eggs laid. The male has been actively helping out during both incubation and feeding and with all 8 hatched and developing well. However put the camera on this afternoon to find only six active chicks and a fly in the box!  I’m assuming that two have died yesterday or during the night and now it looks like one of the parents is trying its hardest to removed the bodies.
